SDG 16 as a compass for navigating intersecting crises: SDG 16 Conference 2023

The pivotal 2023 SDG 16 Conference gathered more than 550 participants from 130 countries to discuss the role of SDG 16 in navigating the intersecting crises the world is facing. Hosted in Rome by the Government of Italy from 30 May to 1 June and co-organized with the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) and the International Development Law Organization (IDLO), the SDG 16 Conference brought together a range of panellists and participants, including ministers and senior government officials, heads of United Nations system entities and other multilateral organizations, and representatives of civil society, youth, academia, the judiciary, and media to address the following themes:

  •  Promoting the United Nations’ New Agenda for Peace;
  •  Restoring trust in public institutions; and
  •  Promoting participatory decision making to accelerate transformative action: food systems and climate change.

The Conference concluded with a call for nations and stakeholders to reinvigorate the passion that was ignited during the inception of the SDGs in 2014. For the global community, the message is clear: without a steadfast focus on the targets of SDG 16+, the broader 2030 Agenda is at risk.
