Energy

Access to energy is key development challenge. Reliable and affordable energy supply is an essential prerequisite to realizing the socio-economic transformation required to end extreme poverty and achieve sustainable development. Globally, almost 2.7 billion people – nearly one in five – suffer from energy poverty through lack of access to modern energy services, defined as access to household electricity and clean cooking facilities.

The rule of law can act as an enabler to access to energy. By ensuring legal certainty and equal application of regulatory frameworks through independent and impartial courts, the rule of law fosters a favorable environment for the investments in energy required to achieve universal energy access.

IDLO is an active member of the Legal Aspects of Sustainable Energy for All (SE4All) Community of Practice, a network of legal organizations created to support the United Nation's SE4All initiative.
