The United Nations celebrates the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People today, highlighting what are some of the world’s most marginalized and vulnerable groups.

The US State Department has strongly defended IDLO’s record in Afghanistan. The comments came in response to allegations by the monitoring agency, SIGAR, that more than $47 million in funds allocated to IDLO for judicial training in Afghanistan lacked proper oversight.

The letter that was sent by the Office of the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) to U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, with relation to the International Development Law Organization (IDLO), contains a number of factual errors and speculative assertions based on incorrect or incomplete information.

IDLO has over 30 years of experience in providing legal training for more than 25,000 people in the developing world, and has been working in Afghanistan since 2002. As an inter-governmental organisation, Afghanistan is also a member state of IDLO and this relationship further strengthens our engagement and effectiveness with local authorities and partners.

Rome, July 9, 2013 – Today, the International Development Law Organization welcomed a delegation of 16 members of the Tajik judiciary to Italy. The delegation, consisting of 15 judges and the Head of the Judicial Training Centre of Tajikistan, is attending a 10 day apprenticeship at the Scuola Superiore della Magistratura and Italian courts.

In the last week of June, in one of the world’s most visually evocative cities, an agreement was reached with major repercussions for the visually impaired: the Marrakesh Treaty on Facilitating Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind.

Rome, July 5, 2013 – The International Development Law Organization celebrated the graduation of 24 participants from a record 20 countries who enrolled in the training course “The Dos and Don’ts of Technology Licensing for Developing Countries”.

IDLO’s Judit Arenas* has highlighted the rule-of-law aspects of securing justice for children in the developing world. Speaking at an EU-UNICEFconference in Brussels, she described children as highly vulnerable.
