The smallest and most densely populated country in mainland Central America, El Salvador is home to a number of brutal criminal gangs. Despite periodic truces, gang-related violence is rampant, accounting for one of the five highest murder rates in the world. Inequality – a contributing factor to the civil war that ravaged the country between 1980 and 1992 – remains a major problem.
Like elsewhere in the world, people with HIV/AIDS suffer some of the worst exclusion and discrimination. IDLO is working with Salvadorean civil society organizations, human rights bodies and universities to strengthen access to legal services for the affected population.
Forging a regional network on HIV in Latin America
More than thirty representatives of civil society, human rights groups and international organizations attended an IDLO conference in Colombia, this week, on strengthening and expanding legal services available to people living with HIV and other key population groups in Latin America.
