The smallest and most densely populated country in mainland Central America, El Salvador is home to a number of brutal criminal gangs. Despite periodic truces, gang-related violence is rampant, accounting for one of the five highest murder rates in the world. Inequality – a contributing factor to the civil war that ravaged the country between 1980 and 1992 – remains a major problem.

Like elsewhere in the world, people with HIV/AIDS suffer some of the worst exclusion and discrimination. IDLO is working with Salvadorean civil society organizations, human rights bodies and universities to strengthen access to legal services for the affected population.
