Forging a regional network on HIV in Latin America

More than thirty representatives of civil society, human rights groups and international organizations attended an IDLO conference in Colombia, this week, on strengthening and expanding legal services available to people living with HIV and other key population groups in Latin America.

The focus of the conference was on building a regional network to share information, deliver e-learning activities, provide online networking opportunities and develop advocacy actions.

Participants explored issues surrounding the legal environment, reducing discrimination, and increasing access to justice for key population groups through the lens of legal services and human rights-based approaches to HIV. Best practices and lessons learned at the different levels – local, national and regional – were shared by representatives of more than 12 Latin American countries as well as UNAIDS, UNDP and the Ford Foundation.

Discussions were positioned within the framework of the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with HIV being a cross-cutting issue in Agenda 2030 spanning goals 3 (health), 5 (gender equality), 10 (fighting inequality), 16 (justice) and 17 (partnership).
