Justice is vital if we are to secure rights and dignity for all. Yet many around the world – the poor, women, children and youth, migrants, ethnic and sexual minorities – struggle to access it.
IDLO works to build confidence in the justice sector by supporting legal and institutional reforms and promoting good governance. We enhance access to justice by enabling governments to uphold human rights and empowering people to claim them. We facilitate innovative legal approaches to support sustainable development and economic opportunity.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted at the United Nations Summit in September 2015, has brought a sea change in international development policy by incorporating access to justice and the rule of law as critical components of sustainable development.
Against a challenging international environment, IDLO’s Strategy 2020 is inspired by the vision of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its goals of advancing access to justice, combatting inequalities and promoting social inclusion. IDLO is ready to contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals in line with its mandate.
Outlining the changes IDLO envisages during the period of 2017 - 2020, Strategy 2020:
- establishes IDLO’s direction for the next four years;
- sets out the goals and objectives in line with our comparative advantage;
- strives to consolidate the significant gains made under the last Strategic Plan; and
- identifies the areas where we will invest to strengthen our capacities and resources.
STRATEGIC PLAN CONSULTATION AND DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
Throughout 2016, IDLO engaged in wide-ranging consultations to inform its new Strategic Plan by listening to the views of our stakeholders and partners, and consulting widely with the broader community working in the field of rule of law and access to justice.
A series of external consultation meetings and high-level interviews with influential stakeholders enabled us to hear the views of governments, international organizations, civil society and others. Through our field offices we sought to engage counterparts and beneficiary groups. We also ran an online survey in English, French and Spanish.
Consultations were aimed at identifying external trends influencing the rule of law sector, understanding the role of the 2030 Agenda, reflecting on IDLO’s strengths, weaknesses and comparative advantages, and pinpointing the direction and key priorities for IDLO’s next strategic cycle.
