This sub-project aims to advance accountability for international crimes in Ukraine. In order to enhance integrity and accountability-focused judicial reform, the Center for International Legal Cooperation (CILC) is supporting partner courts in Ukraine in the development and dissemination of an Integrity Policy and, in cooperation with the National School of Judges of Ukraine, is delivering training on integrity for judges and court staff. Furthermore, the implementing partner is facilitating consultation with a range of stakeholders on legislative proposals related to the criminal justice chain for lawmakers in Ukraine to support institutions working on judicial reforms. CILC is also piloting a project to increase probation and alternative sanctions in Ukraine by enhancing community service sanctions; providing a mentoring programme and delivering training on basic probation skills to probation officers; developing and incorporating a training of trainers module in the training curriculum of the Department for Probation of the Academy; raising awareness, organizing discussions and exposure visits for judges, public prosecutors, staff of the probation services and the Bar on the benefits and advantages of probation services; conducting research on probation as a reintegration tool for war veterans with the aim of developing and implementing a Guidebook and a tailored training session, to reduce violence and crime within communities during and after the war. Finally, CILC is facilitating a peer-to-peer Working Group with key stakeholders in the justice sector to map the current state of affairs on judicial reform, fair trials, access to justice and probation for EU alignment, and identify relevant areas in which to provide support.
