Indonesian-Dutch Comparative Justice Policy Workshop

A Comparative Justice workshop held at IDLO's Branch Office in The Hague in December 2015 offered a chance to debate recent developments in legal aid services and access to justice in the host country, the Netherlands, in Indonesia and elsewhere. The workshop was organized in collaboration with the Open Society Justice Initiative (OSJI), the Indonesian Ministry of National Development and Planning Agency (BAPPENAS), and the National Law Development Agency of the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights (BPHN).

Ibu Diani Sadiawati of BAPPENAS stresses the importance of cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands, as well as with other international partners, in implementing the United Nations Sustainable Developments Goals (SDGs).

Faustina Pereira, head of IDLO's branch office in the Hague, introduces a human rights perspective. Ms. Pereira's background is in legal empowerment in her native Bangladesh.

Imam Nasima of Leiden University commends participants' pro-active attitude. But there was agreement that more effort was needed to collect and consolidate data on legal aid and access to justice.

How to quantify Access to Justice was a key debating topic. Sumaiya Islam of the Open Society Justice Initiative acts as rapporteur for a group exercise on developing an Access to Justice Index.

IDLO's Helene Molinier, in charge of Strategic Initiatives, opens the workshop's second day, dedicated to national and international justice policy models.

Enny Nurbaningsih of BPHN presents on Legal Aid in Practice in her country -- particularly in relation to SDG 16, informally known as the 'Rule of Law goal'.

Marianne Peters from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs speaks about Advancing Access to Justice through International Cooperation. The Netherlands and Indonesia have strong historic ties that translate into close bilateral relations, including in the area of development.

Danielle Andela, IDLO program coordinator for the Indonesia-Netherlands Rule of Law Fund, outlines options for the organization of a national legal aid forum in Indonesia.
