On 20 February 2014, in the Bruno Volta district of Santiago del Estero, Argentina, youths working for the local “Access to Justice Center” kicked off their own campaign against institutional violence, and in particular against the ill-treatment young people from impoverished backgrounds may suffer at the hands of the police.
During the event, under the slogan “Hands off! Your violence = my insecurity," they distributed materials about the rights of people in police custody, with a special focus on underage detainees.
The campaign was born out of a training workshop IDLO carried out in June 2014 in cooperation with Argentina’s Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, in the framework of the European Commission’s EUROsociAL II Program.
The event included the painting of a mural and a street theater performance. In coming weeks, similar events will take place in other vulnerable neighborhoods, and in Santiago del Estero city center.
