Biodiversity, Nagoya Protocol and National Laws

In 2014 a new international treaty entered into force – the Nagoya Protocol under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). The Protocol sets up a new global regime that aims to promote research and innovation using genetic resources and traditional knowledge – key ingredients for new technology and products in the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, food and beverage, and biotech sectors. In return, it calls on these companies to share benefits fairly and equitably with the countries, indigenous peoples and local communities that have nurtured these resources through the ages.

With funding from the Japan Biodiversity Fund, IDLO and the Secretariat of the CBD (SCBD) partnered on a project to facilitate this process. It aims to ensure each country has their own national legal advisors to guide them in developing laws that translate the ambitions of the Nagoya Protocol into realities on the ground.
