Philippines Forum on Justice and Integrity

Joint Forum – Why Our Work Matters? Revisiting Institutional Efforts on Justice and Integrity

The realization of justice depends on respect for institutions and the rule of law. By adhering to well-defined legislation, impartial rulings can facilitate a fair, efficient and accountable delivery of justice.

Corruption, however, challenges the rule of law and justice and stifles societal development. Vulnerable groups are particularly affected, but so too are the public institutions that should act as a bulwark against imbalance and corruption.

In 2018, both the Office of the Ombudsman and IDLO are commemorating their 30th anniversaries, and the Philippines was one of the eight founding governments that decided to establish IDLO as an intergovernmental organization dedicated to promoting the rule of law. At a Joint Forum, the two organizations will talk about their journeys towards building just nations and societies of integrity and call for more harmonized anti-corruption and justice reform initiatives.

Upholding justice and promoting integrity in governance is a collective responsibility. The Forum will convene the perspectives of the different branches of government – including participants from the Supreme Court, the Department of Justice, the Senate and the House of Representatives – to further enhance institutional synergies and create a stronger and more coherent reform agenda.

It will be the first public forum attended by the newly appointed Secretary of Justice Menardo I. Guevarra, and one of the last attended by the current Ombudsman Conchita Carpio Morales before she steps down in the coming months.
