English

Uganda has made much progress in reducing poverty and promoting stability in past years, particularly through improvements on several justice-related indicators. Despite these gains, the justice sector still faces significant challenges relating to funding and capacity, public perceptions of pervasive corruption, inaccessibility of services for the poor sections of the population, low quality and sustainability of the legal aid and information services, costliness and slow speeds of dispute resolution, among others. These challenges have negatively affected citizens’ confidence in the formal system leading people to resort to other means to seek recourse and may also increase the likelihood of violence and further corruption. There is a therefore a need for effective interventions to enhance the reach, quality and sustainability of access to justice in Uganda.

UGANDA: Advancing Justice and Freedom for All

This sub-project aims to improve protection of women, men, girls, and boys against trafficking in persons (TIP) in Mbale, Napak, and Busia districts in Uganda. In order to increase responsiveness of justice institutions to TIP, Willow International is conducting a series of capacity development activities for police officers, prosecutors of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, immigration and district officials on how to respond to TIP and delivering protection and legal aid services to TIP survivors.

UGANDA: STRENGTHENING ACCESS TO LABOUR JUSTICE FOR POOR, VULNERABLE, AND MARGINALIZED WORKERS IN UGANDA

This sub-project aims to strengthen access to labour justice and improve the protection of workers’ rights for poor, vulnerable, and marginalized workers in Uganda’s informal sector, particularly in Kampala, Wakiso, and Mukono districts. Platform for Labour Action (PLA) is empowering workers through labour rights awareness-raising campaigns, accessible legal information, and legal aid services, including advice, mediation, conciliation, and court representation.
