Albania
Despite progress and reforms in many fields, Albania still faces major challenges including crime, endemic corruption, weak law enforcement and lack of infrastructure. The judicial system is still perceived to be slow, inefficient, lacking in transparency and pervaded by corruption. Some success in fighting illegal trade in weapons and drugs notwithstanding, organized criminal activities continue to be a serious problem.

Child Justice in Eastern Europe and CIS
IDLO has partnered with UNICEF to study the factors which support or inhibit children’s equitable access to justice in post-communist societies. The nine-month research project in Albania, Montenegro, Georgia and Kyrgyzstan will conclude in 2014. It will provide greater insight into local realities, concerns and approaches, and make culturally appropriate, sustainable and effective recommendations for policy and programming.
IDLO: Pursuing Child Justice
IDLO’s Judit Arenas* has highlighted the rule-of-law aspects of securing justice for children in the developing world. Speaking at an EU-UNICEFconference in Brussels, she described children as highly vulnerable.
Anti-Corruption: Rule of Law 1, Graft 0
Anti-corruption and integrity-building efforts are being seen as a means to achieve better development outcomes, rather than a mere moral endeavor. In its most explicit involvement with the topic yet, IDLO has told Albania that it is ready to assist its attempts to cut corruption and boost the rule of law.
