This sub-project aims to enhance legal protection for refugees and access to land and commercial justice for marginalized and vulnerable people in Uganda, specifically in the districts of Kampala, Isingiro, Masindi and Jinja. In order to increase access to quality legal aid services by refugees and host communities, the Uganda Law Society (ULS) is delivering a series of training sessions to justice sector professionals to enhance their skills on legal protection and the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanisms; providing legal representation; and offering legal, counselling and referral services to refugees and host communities. The implementing partner is also supporting target beneficiaries to enhance their legal drafting skills and facilitate their easy access to legal resources by making available legal information and documentation on the Electronic Legal Aid Centre, a self-help website developed by the ULS, and organizing in-person information sessions in the settlements and host communities on refugee protection, land and employment rights, Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and access to justice. Furthermore, in the area of commercial, employment and land law, the ULS is delivering a series of training sessions to duty bearers on these topics; providing legal advice, representation, and mediation, negotiation and reconciliation services to vulnerable and marginalized persons, with a focus on refugee women; and supporting the execution of court judgements on land matters for project beneficiaries. Finally, the ULS is conducting a series of awareness-raising events on refugee rights, land, commercial and employment rights and delivering training to community-based volunteers on GBV and basic legal procedures to enhance their capacity in delivering justice services.
