IDLO met Somalia’s Federal Minister of Justice, H.E. Hassan Hussein Haji, to discuss his work to strengthen the linkages between formal and informal justice, and to improve alternative dispute resolution justice mechanisms. Lack of access to a fair and equitable justice system is one of the most pressing problems confronting Somalia. Informal justice systems, offering alternative dispute resolution, are often better placed to respond to the immediate justice needs of many Somalis. IDLO assists the Somali Government to establish Alternative Dispute Resolution Centers and promote the use of customary norms (Xeer) and Sharia law in line with the Somalia Provisional Constitution and international human rights standards.
