IDLO at GQUAL: Lack of gender parity in justice sector

12 Dec 2017

On the margins of the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly where the 193 countries adopted the 2030 Agenda, IDLO supported the launch of the GQUAL Campaign as a founding member alongside leading academics, state representatives, lawyers, jurists, activists and gender experts.

The GQUAL Campaign seeks to shine a spotlight on the under-representation of women in virtually all international tribunals and monitoring bodies, as well as the grave repercussions gender disparity can have on international law, human rights and access to justice.

Two years after its inauguration, supporters and members of the GQUAL Campaign convened for a conference at the Peace Palace in The Hague to discuss the lack of gender parity and commit to an Action Plan, where signatories pledged to implement actions within their spheres of influence.

In her opening remarks, IDLO Director-General Irene Khan shared IDLO’s work to increase women’s professional participation in the justice sector, advocating for bottom-up strategies at local and national levels in order to change the picture of international justice.
