Myanmar Attorney General reaffirms cooperation

The Myanmar Union Attorney General H.E. U Tun Tun Oo visited the Yangon Rule of Law Centre where he met with staff and graduates from the rule of law courses and observed an ongoing ‘training of trainers’ course.

The Yangon Rule of Law Centre is one of four Centers established by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in partnership with the International Development Law Organization (IDLO). The other three Centres are in Mandalay, Myitkyina (Kachin State) and Taunggyi (Shan State). The Centres provide an opportunity to legal professionals, community leaders and civil society organizations to gain knowledge, skills, values and general awareness of the law through a targeted curriculum and outreach forums.

H.E. U Tun Thu Oo said, “Strong cooperation among government, judiciary, lawyers and civil society is essential to strengthen the rule of law in Myanmar.”

He reassured those present that the Union Attorney General’s Office will increase its participation and support to the Rule of Law Centres to make sure that the work of the Centers is successful and beneficial to the people of Myanmar. Earlier this month, H.E. U Tun Tun Oo also visited the Mandalay Centre.

Established under the auspices of the Union Parliament of Myanmar and guidance from the State Counsellor H.E. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the Rule of Law Centres are an integral part of UNDP’s support to democratic governance in Myanmar. They have grown into vital community hubs where government and people come together to exchange insights and discuss necessary measures regarding issues of mutual concern such as drug trafficking, the impact of drug use on communities and prevention strategies, labor laws, squatters’ rights and land-related issues, violence against women and children, and the new legal aid law.

The Rule of Law Centres project is implemented by UNDP in partnership with IDLO with financial support from the governments of Finland, Japan, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the United States.
