IDLO to promote SDG 16 and increased investment in the rule of law at the High-Level Political Forum at United Nations Headquarters in New York
SDG 16, on peace, justice and inclusive institutions, is at the heart of what makes the 2030 Agenda transformative. It can play a vital role in addressing multiple global crises, including conflicts, lack of trust in public institutions and climate change. Investing in the rule of law and access to justice is therefore essential to catalyse progress across the entire 2030 Agenda.
At the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) 2024, held from 8-17 July 2024, under the auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council in New York, IDLO will be making the case for the vital role of SDG 16 in addressing issues of human rights, justice, equity, inclusion, accountability and good governance to tackle today’s interconnected crises and accelerate the implementation of the SDGs.
The HLPF provides a platform to review progress on the 2030 Agenda, build on the outcomes of the SDG Summit held in September 2023, and the High-Level SDG 16 Conference co-organized by IDLO, UN DESA and Italy in May 2024, and to identify ways to accelerate the delivery of the SDGs.
This year’s Forum explores the theme, “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: the effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions”, and includes an in-depth review of Sustainable Development Goals 1, 2, 13, 16 and 17.
IDLO Director-General Jan Beagle will moderate the HLPF Review of SDG 16, “SDG 16 and the interlinkages with other SDGs – Peace Justice and Strong Institutions”, on Thursday, 11 July from 10:10 am-1 pm EDT in Conference Room 4.
An IDLO side event, “Game-changing rule of law solutions to tackle global challenges and accelerate progress on the 2030 Agenda”, will take place on Monday, 8 July from 1:15-2:30 pm EDT in Conference Room 7, and livestreamed on UN Web TV.
IDLO will participate in several other HLPF sessions, side events and meetings during the Forum, with a focus on enhancing political and financial support for SDG 16; promoting people-centred justice; advancing a feminist approach to the rule of law; increasing openness and transparency and combating corruption to restore trust in public institutions; recognizing the value of whole-of-society and whole-of-government approaches and collaboration in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda; and encouraging Member States to prioritize justice in their national budgets and development assistance, and to report on SDG 16 in their voluntary national reviews.
