At IDLO, we firmly believe that the causes and effects of climate change – and the actions needed to address them – are rooted in issues of justice, equity and the rule of law.
That is why, as the only global intergovernmental organization exclusively devoted to promoting the rule of law as an enabler of peace and sustainable development, IDLO will be championing a rule of law approach to climate justice at the 27th Conference of the Parties (COP27) to the UNFCCC from 6-18 November 2022 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.
IDLO contributes to climate justice by empowering the most climate-vulnerable people – including women and girls, youth, indigenous communities and climate migrants – to realize environmental rights and actively participate in decision-making processes. We champion people-centred laws and institutions to support climate-resilient development and focus on improving governance of land and other natural resources, with a focus on enhancing land rights and sustaining peace.
At COP27, we add our voice to the call that efforts on mitigation must be matched with urgent action on adaptation to build resilience around the world, and for addressing loss and damage, including through investments by all countries in early warning systems and support for those who lack capacity.
By empowering people through the rule of law and making justice issues part of the solution, we have the chance to achieve a fair, inclusive and climate-secure future for people and the planet.
