Panel discussion - Women Justice Professionals and Gender Equality: Contributions, Challenges and Ways Forward
The effective participation of women in all aspects of justice delivery is a human right – an integral part of their participation in public and political life, and a valuable component of governance. This right has been affirmed at the highest level, with the 2030 Agenda’s Sustainable Development Goals 5 (gender equality and women’s empowerment) and 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions) focusing squarely on women’s full and effective participation at all levels of governance as well as ensuring inclusive and representative decision-making.
Although women justice professionals (whether as judges, prosecutors, lawyers) continue to face barriers, they are improving their participation, whether through increased numbers, better quality of participation, or enhanced capacity to influence legal and policy reform. Exploring more concretely the contributions of women judges to gender equality is particularly timely and significant as gender justice remains elusive in multiple aspects.
Drawing from local and global experiences, this event seeks to discuss: How can women justice professionals, individually and collectively, (continue to) contribute to enhancing gender equality?
