Justice in Constitutional Transitions

IDLO has joined forces with International IDEA, the Stockholm-based Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, to organize an ambitious workshop on the role of the judiciary in constitutional transitions. Held in The Hague on November 14-15, the workshop covered topics including the independence and integrity of the judiciary, the strategic behavior of judicial review courts in new democracies, and constitution-building for the poor. Case studies were presented and discussed from a great variety of mid- and post-transition nations, all of whom sent judges and experts: Chile, Egypt, Ghana, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Libya, Nepal, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, Tunisia, and Zimbabwe.  Speaking at the workshop, James Justice Allala Deng of South Sudan gave special thanks to IDLO for building the capacity of his country's entire judicial profession.
