Following the Tunisian revolution of 2011, the new Constitution adopted in 2014 aimed to embed the principle of equality between women and men as well as ensuring the State’s obligation to protect women’s rights. However, despite the reforms to the legal framework in Tunisia to increase protection for women against gender-based violence, justice sector professionals, particularly judges and bailiffs, have limited knowledge, skills and capacity to act as effective gender justice agents, as stipulated by the new Law.
Funded by the Government of Italy, IDLO is implementing a project that aims to strengthen the capacities of justice sector professionals, and the Ministry of Women, Family, Children and Seniors on gender responsive justice delivery. IDLO will organize and deliver a training session for judges to ensure that they acquire an in-depth understanding of the new Law on gender-based violence and properly implement it. IDLO will also work to develop a Training Manual on gender equality and gender-sensitive application of the new Law on gender-based violence for bailiffs so they can handle cases related to women and children victims of violence. Lastly, the project will work to endorse and approve the Manual of Procedure on Shelters so that it can be adopted by all relevant stakeholders, and mainly the Ministry of Women, Family, Children and Seniors as the key responsible body for the shelters in Tunisia.
