For over 15 years, IDLO has been assisting the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan develop accessible, accountable, effective and efficient justice sector institutions. While significant progress has been made, many challenges remain, frequently perceived to be rooted in the ongoing conflict, the impact of insecurity and the public’s fear for their safety. There is a strong need to address the concerns and goals of the justice sector and find innovative solutions and methods to strengthen its resilience.
Funded by the United States Department of State, IDLO is implementing a project that aims to assess the current status of the justice sector’s inclusiveness and accessibility, study the impact of insecurity and implement interventions that can ameliorate this impact. Under this project, IDLO will hold a series of conferences, workshops, focus group discussions and will conduct a nation-wide Survey of the Justice Sector of Afghanistan. The assessment will provide a detailed understanding of the impact insecurity has on the development and capacity of the Afghan legal system. Finally, IDLO will work to ensure that justice workers and those they serve can feel safer and thereby expand access to justice in unsafe, rural or remote areas, improve the capacity of justice sector professionals and foster women’s meaningful participation in the justice sector.
