Child Justice in the Middle East and North Africa

IDLO has partnered with UNICEF to gain a deeper understanding of the use of diversion and alternative measures to detention for children in conflict with the law. This seven-month project in Jordan, Sudan and Tunisia will conclude in 2015. Through consultation and engagement with organizations and individuals working with children and the juvenile justice system and based on local needs, the research will propose concrete policy and programming recommendations on diversion and alternative measures to detention in the countries of focus. The project is aligned with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, providing that arrest, detention or imprisonment of a child must be used only as a measure of last resort and for the shortest appropriate period of time.
