Dealing with ecosystem degradation has long been seen as the purview of environmentalists alone. With the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), biodiversity has been recognized as essential to human resilience and economic opportunity, and its preservation requires action from all sectors of society. IDLO is taking a lead in recognizing that 'rule of law' based approaches do offer tools that can move biodiversity efforts beyond small pockets of success to the long-term,scaled-up change, which is needed to secure just and equitable lives for people around the world.
IDLO, together with the Swiss Federal Office of the Environment (FOEN) and SwedBio – Stockholm Resilience Centre, are working to foster dialogues and develop practical tools for countries to use in their efforts to raise awareness and capacity, and bring together actors from different levels of society that will collaborate to achieve co-benefit for the environment and human development.
- Awareness raising materials: New IDLO factsheets are now available that introduce the essential facts on biodiversity, rule of law and the SDGs.
- Advocacy events: IDLO brings together law and justice actors working across different sectors to define a new vision of the role of law and justice for environmental sustainability.

- Capacity building tools, NEW: IDLO is now developing new tools for capacity building, including a toolkit on Legal Preparedness for Achieving Biodiversity Goals under the SDGs and a Legal Assessment Tool for Biodiversity Mainstreaming.
