This sub-project aimed to scale up a new model of gender-sensitive sentencing and effective delivery of gender-sensitive community service orders in Western Uganda. Working closely with the Judiciary and the Uganda Prisons Service, Penal Reform International (PRI) strengthened the capacity of criminal justice actors on the management of women offenders and improving representation and support for women offenders in Uganda. The implementing partner delivered a series of capacity development workshops and training sessions to judicial officers, police and prison officers, community service staff and civil society organizations on gender-sensitive sentencing and alternatives to reduce women imprisonment. PRI also worked with state and non-state actors to foster the development of informed policies on the use of a gender-sensitive approach and non-custodial alternatives for women offenders and increase evidence-based sentencing for women offenders. Legal counselling, advice, and support for family visits to women offenders was also provided.
