This sub-project sought to enhance access to justice for poor, vulnerable women, children and marginalized communities in the districts of Iganga, Lamwo, Wakiso, and Kampala in Uganda. The Uganda Association of Women Lawyers (FIDA-UGANDA) adopted a three-pronged strategy of intervention by 1) increasing the awareness of communities on women’s rights and gender equality through online legal information, dialogues, sensitization sessions and legal advice; 2) providing training and mentoring to informal justice actors to strengthen their capacity to resolve disputes and provide referral services; and 3) increasing legal aid service provision for vulnerable women, children and marginalized communities, through the provision of legal counselling, advice, mediation and court representation by operating in mobile and in-site legal aid clinics. The implementing partner also provided legal support, and delivered a series of training and awareness-raising sessions on land and property rights to women’s groups in order to increase their knowledge and capacity to secure their land and business operations. Finally, FIDA-Uganda revived its Strategic Litigation Unit with the aim of securing and redressing women’s rights issues at community, national and international levels.
