CSW64 | IDLO at the Commission on the Status of Women

25 Feb 2020

In 2020, the global community will mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women [1] and adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action [2] (1995). A five-year milestone will be reached towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development [3]. 2020 is therefore a pivotal year for the accelerated realization of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, everywhere.

The sixty-fourth session of the Commission on the Status of Women [4] (CSW64) will take place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 9 to 20 March 2020. The Commission is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of women’s rights, gender equality and the empowerment of women. The main focus of the 2020 session will be on the review and appraisal of the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcomes of the 23rd special session of the General Assembly [5]. Ensuring women’s empowerment and gender equality though the rule of law has been a key component of IDLO’s work around the world, both at the policy and programmatic levels. In particular, IDLO’s Gender Strategy [6] emphasizes the centrality of the rule of law in helping women to become equal partners in decision-making and development, and in achieving justice.

In an effort to further highlight the importance of women’s empowerment and women’s rights within the context of justice and sustainable development, IDLO will be actively contributing to the work of the Commission by participating in the UN General Debate [7] and by co-organizing three events during the two weeks (March 9-20, 2020). Read more

Our gender work

IDLO's work on Women and Girls [9]

In much of the world, women and girls continue to be denied equal protection under the law. Many suffer appalling violence and confront significant cultural and economic barriers. Discrimination, low access to education, poverty, family pressure and social stigma obstruct their freedom and advancement. Family disputes over inheritance and ownership are often resolved at community or village level, reinforcing traditional hierarchies and excluding women from the decision-making process.

Across all of its programs, IDLO works to empower women, with the rule of law both a broad frame of reference and a flexible tool. To achieve this aim, top-down reforms must be coupled with efforts to protect women and promote gender equality. The aim is a justice system which affirms women’s rights and allows their voice to be heard. Read more [9]
