STATEMENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT LAW ORGANIZATION

Thank you, Madam President.
The International Development Law Organization thanks the Special Rapporteur for her report and commends her important work.
As the only global intergovernmental organization exclusively devoted to promoting peace and development through the rule of law, IDLO attaches great importance to the legal protections and access to justice for IDPs and other vulnerable and marginalized communities.
IDLO agrees with the Special Rapporteur that in order to prevent displacement, mitigate its impact and achieve durable solutions, it is essential to address and prevent violations of housing, land and property rights through structural and institutional reforms, to improve good governance in the justice sector and return to the rule of law.
IDLO believes that strengthening the legal frameworks that apply to IDPs, both at the international and domestic level, is crucial.
To this end, IDLO is working in Somalia with the Federal Government and member states in the formulation, revision and implementation of rights-based laws, policy and strategies concerning IDPs, with an emphasis on the needs of women and youth. IDLO is also supporting Alternative Dispute Resolution Centers in the country, which provide legal services to IDPs, considering that informal justice systems can enhance access to equitable and quality justice for all, ensuring that no one is left behind.
We ask the Special Rapporteur what priority legal modifications are needed, both nationally and internationally, to achieve durable solutions and the rule of law for IDPs.
