IDLO and AALCO sign agreement for Africa-Asia collaboration

19 nov 2019

IDLO has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organization (AALCO), seeking to promote the rule of law and provide support on investment and economic law to developing countries in Asia and Africa.

AALCO is an intergovernmental organization that serves as an advisory body to its 48 member states in the field of international law and as a forum for Asian-African cooperation in legal matters of common concern.

“Improving the climate for investment and cooperation between countries in Africa and Asia is a key priority for IDLO,” said IDLO’s Director-General Irene Khan. “We share AALCO’s commitment to enhanced collaboration in the area of international law and are delighted to formalize our partnership.”

In 2017, AALCO joined other legal institutions and law firms in pledging support to IDLO’s Investment Support Programme for Least Developed Countries (LDCs), a public-private partnership developed to provide legal services and professional assistance to LDC governments for the negotiation of investment agreements and the resolution of investment-related disputes.

The Secretary-General of AALCO, Kennedy Gastorn, participated as a speaker in a plenary roundtable within a special segment on partnerships, knowledge exchange and capacity development at the SDG16 Conference in Rome, co-organized by UNDESA and IDLO with the Government of Italy in May 2019.
