Western Balkans: boosting business through tax law cooperation

17 Sep 2019

Representatives from a range of judicial institutions convened in Sofia for a regional event aimed at improving the investment climate in the Western Balkans by increasing the uniformity of judicial practice in tax related cases.

Organized by IDLO in partnership with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Bulgarian National Institute of Justice in spring 2019, the event marked the completion of a training project in Bulgaria on the implementation and enforcement of tax legislation.

Participants had strongly underlined the added value of cooperation between judicial training institutions across the Western Balkans, a region which includes Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia and the Republic of North Macedonia.

“This regional event creates opportunities to strengthen the cooperation between Bulgaria and its valuable partners in the country such as EBRD and IDLO. We have no doubt that the project will help improve the investment climate in Bulgaria and bring new investing opportunities,” declared Miglena Tacheva, Director of the Bulgarian National Institute of Justice.

Along the same lines, Larisa Manstirli, Head of the EBRD Residence Office, said: “Having this regional event is a fantastic opportunity to network, exchange practices and outline future potential areas of cooperation and development. EBRD hopes that the project will enhance future investment.”

“IDLO attaches great importance to the Western Balkan region and is aiming to replicate the Bulgarian tax legislation success story in other countries,” explained Ljubomir Petruljeskov, IDLO Program Coordinator.

IDLO has been working to strengthen the rule of law in Bulgaria since the 1990s by providing training and technical assistance to build legal capacity on intellectual property, tax law, commercial law and anti-corruption efforts.
