Gender discrimination in law remains a significant barrier to achieving justice, equality, and sustainable development worldwide. To date, no country has yet achieved full legal equality between men and women. Across Africa, including in the North and the Horn of Africa, women continue to have fewer rights than men.

These legal gaps disproportionally affect women facing intersectional discrimination, particularly in fragile contexts including conflict, health and climate-related crises.

Achieving gender equality requires strong gender-transformative legal frameworks. Fair and clear laws are crucial to protecting and advancing women’s and girls’ rights. Discriminatory laws, on the other hand, hinder women's full advancement, intensify the push back against women's rights, and obstruct realization of all critical areas of concern in Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and all goals across the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Legal review and reform efforts have been conducted in many countries in the region, offering successful approaches to address discriminatory laws and accelerate the emergence of gender-transformative legal frameworks. These examples build on, inform and implement the Equality in Law for Women and Girls by 2030: A Multistakeholder Strategy for Accelerated Action, adopted to fast track the repeal of discriminatory laws and address the legal needs of more than 50 million women and girls.

This event will examine the advancements and good practices made in recognizing and eliminating discriminatory laws and strengthening legal frameworks for women and girls, while also identifying pathways for continued progress.
