Partnership Forum

Justice in Crisis

November 30, 2022 - 3:00 to 4:30 pm CET | Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy Piazzale della Farnesina, 1 and online

The world is experiencing major, intersecting crises, most significantly, the lingering COVID-19 pandemic, the rise in violent conflict and the increasingly severe effects of climate change.

They have been accompanied by the erosion of trust in governments and institutions at the national level, and a pushback against multilateral norms and processes, including sustained attacks on human rights and the rules-based international order.

Justice systems have been particularly hard hit, with a wide range of indices showing the justice gap growing dangerously wide, particularly for women, young people and other groups that are traditionally excluded and at risk of being left behind.

Collectively, these trends represent a significant challenge to peace and sustainable development. Despite being almost half-way through the period for implementing the 2030 Agenda, the world is behind on achieving all 17 Sustainable Development Goals. In some cases, there has been a backslide on decades of hard-fought development gains.

The objective of the 2022 IDLO Partnership Forum is to help identify concrete actions that governments, international organisations, businesses and communities can take to promote more peaceful, just and sustainable societies at a time of crisis.

Drawing from the experiences of a distinguished set of speakers, this year’s Forum will explore how the unmet demand for justice and the rule of law is at the root of many of the problems the world is currently facing. It will highlight the challenges faced by justice systems and the efforts being undertaken to innovate and promote more people-centred approaches to the rule of law. It will also put a special emphasis on the need for justice in crisis and conflict situations.

Held annually in conjunction with IDLO’s Assembly of Parties, the Partnership Forum is a platform for multi-stakeholder dialogue. It brings together IDLO Member Parties, governments, policy makers and development practitioners to stimulate dialogue on critical rule of law issues, share experience and facilitate partnerships.
