Notorious Rio district in line for civic empowerment

As Rio de Janeiro is busy preparing for the upcoming World Cup and Olympic games, a team of IDLO experts is visiting the Brazilian city to work on a project to improve access to justice for some of its most impoverished inhabitants.

The project, led by the Brazilian Ministry of Justice and the Secretary for Welfare and Human Rights of Rio's state government, aims to set up a center providing much-needed legal and social assistance in Cidade de Deus, one of the city's notorious favelas.

IDLO experts will be meeting with institutions and community representatives with a view to drafting plans for providing adequate services and identifying channels to inform citizens about their rights and how to claim them.

This is part of the work IDLO is carrying out in six countries across Latin America under the Eurosocial II programme, which promotes social cohesion in the continent.
