IDLO and Prof. Mohammed Yunus pledge commitment to end exploitation of women in garment sector

New York, 27 September – In a meeting with the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Prof. Mohammed Yunus, IDLO Director-General, Ms. Irene Khan pledged her support to an international initiative to end the exploitation of workers in the garment sector.

Ms Khan and Prof. Yunus met to discuss the urgent need for global action to improve the appalling working conditions of women in garment factories in developing countries.

In an op-ed published in the International Herald Tribune earlier this year in the aftermath of the Rana Plaza disaster, Ms Khan highlighted the plight of “women (in Bangladesh) who bear the brunt of an appalling labor-safety record”. The two leaders discussed measures that would combine safety in factories with a living wage.
