The rule of law for sustainable development and peace-building

The international community has set itself an ambitious undertaking with the new Sustainable Development Goals to end poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, while at the same time seeking to build peace.

For its part, IDLO has consulted widely in the development of its new Strategic Plan, which sets the direction of the organization for the next three years, on the contribution it can make to Agenda 2030, particularly in relation to Goal 16.

IDLO’s Strategy 2020 lays out the organization’s plan to advance access to justice, combat inequalities and promote social inclusion for all.

Director-General Irene Khan presented the strategy to IDLO’s Member Parties, partners and other champions of the rule of law at a briefing in New York, hosted by H.E. Ambassador Sebastiano Cardi, Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations.

Discussing the role of IDLO’s work in implementing the SDGs and ensuring sustainable peace, Ms. Khan highlighted the impact of the organization’s activities building effective, accessible and accountable institutions, promoting fair laws and policies, and empowering people to realize their rights.

Participants also considered the contribution IDLO’s work can bring to the peacebuilding agenda of the United Nations.
