IDLO has completed a successful inception mission in Haiti to determine the immediate legal needs of vulnerable groups affected by the earthquake of January 12, 2010. Despite significant challenges, IDLO was able to meet with a number of Haitian government and institutional leaders, as well as humanitarian relief actors working under the umbrella of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Assistance (OCHA). IDLO received enthusiastic support from those it met, and its preliminary findings on the post-disaster legal needs in Haiti have already been endorsed by the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).

L’Organisation Internationale de Droit du Développement (OIDD) avertit que des standards légaux de prévention doivent être mis en place en matière de trafic d’enfant, suite aux catastrophes naturelles qui en augmentent le risque. Le trafic humain est un problème mondial qui affecte des milliers d’individus, on estime que 1,2 million d’enfants en sont victimes chaque année. La traite des enfants est un crime transnational en pleine expansion et des plus lucratifs, on parle d’un chiffre d’affaires annuel pouvant atteindre 10 millions de dollars.

New Book on Legal Empowerment Strategies (in French)
At a launch event in Geneva, IDLO released a new book examining issues in the emerging development field of legal empowerment. Legal Empowerment: Practitioners' Perspectives, edited by Stephen Golub, contributes empirical knowledge to the debate on how disadvantaged populations will best secure their economic and social rights. It is the second publication in an IDLO book series entitled Lessons Learned: Narrative Accounts of Legal Reform in Developing and Transition Countries.
