Lebanon has established IDLO's 46th Alumni Association. The new association becomes part of IDLO's Global Network of Alumni & Alumni Associations, which connects legal professionals and policymakers in developing countries throughout the world.
IDLO has worked in the country on a variety of projects, and is currently providing technical assistance for the justice sector. This project is the outcome of cooperation between the Italian government and the Lebanese Ministry of Justice on mutual legal assistance on selected topics. About one hundred judges and lawyers are being trained on theoretical and practical knowledge on contemporary judicial issues, and on methods to criminalize related acts and enforce related laws.
The new association is located in Beirut's Bahri Center. Its founding members are Maya Matar, Zeina Chédid, Christine Abi Chacra, Carol Yazbek Khouzami and Roula Karam, with board members to be selected shortly.
IDLO encourages participants in its programs to establish professional networking groups with the purpose of providing a sustainable contribution to the rule of law in their countries. The Alumni Associations support the work of IDLO at a national level and organize legal education, policy dialogues and technical assistance for legal professionals across the public and private sectors. The first IDLO Alumni Association was established in Cameroon in 1994.
