ALUMNI

The IDLO global network of alumni and alumni associations has become an important resource for IDLO and for the communities that it serves.  Since its establishment, IDLO has worked with more than 20,000 legal professionals in 175 countries.  This is a significant human resource.  In 46 countries, IDLO alumni have established independent national alumni associations, with membership drawn from legal, business, academic and civil society communities.

THE IDLO SHARING NETWORK

The internet-based IDLO Sharing Network will provide a continuous, dynamic, user-driven forum to strengthen connections among legal professionals around the world.  The Sharing Network will facilitate knowledge sharing, capacity building, institution building and dialogue that contributes to identifying best practices and better solutions through information exchange among network participants.  This will in turn support and foster national processes of institutional and legal reforms.  IDLO alumni associations will contribute actively to the Sharing Network in various ways, including:

  • Participation in the identification of priority topics and collaboration in scheduling the Sharing Network programs and activities
  • Collection of documentation, including national legislation, jurisprudence and other useful legal documentation to be inserted in the documents section of the Sharing Network
  • Promotion of network activities and identification of participants and/or experts
  • Participation as moderators or facilitators for on-line events

Each alumni association will have a dedicated space within the network platform where associations can exchange information, ask for assistance and receive mentoring from more experienced associations when embarking on a new activity, as well as promote their activities within their own legal communities.

IDLO's vision is to empower its network of alumni associations so that they are able to:

  • Provide continuing education, research and publication at the country level
  • Supply IDLO with important information on emerging legal issues for program design, and assist in needs assessments, project implementation and post-project evaluations
  • Provide legal resources, advice and assistance to other NGOs and the local legal community
  • Collaborate with government, business and civil society to advance implementation of country poverty reduction strategies (PRS) and country development strategies to reach the Millennium Development Goals.  Along with organizational capacity building, IDLO assists alumni associations in designing and conducting substantive training and legal technical assistance activities. Training of trainers elements are increasingly built into IDLO programs so that alumni can carry out their own training activities.
