The rural poor face escalating threats to their land rights as more powerful economic actors move to acquire increasingly valuable agricultural land. This paper presents and analyzes several examples of legal empowerment initiatives that support the rural poor to secure their land rights and protect them from such threats. The paper draws lessons from these examples, highlights their impacts and difficulties, and outlines the role of external support in securing the land and natural resource rights of the rural poor.
