Irene Khan takes office as Director-General of the International Development Law Organization

Rome, Italy - 16 January 2012 - Irene Khan took up office as the new Director-General of the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) in Rome today.
Ms. Khan was elected as Director General by IDLO’s Assembly of Member Parties at their annual general meeting on 17 November 2011.

“It is a great privilege to lead IDLO at what promises to be an exciting and defining moment for the world and also for the organization as it looks to mark its 30th anniversary next year,” she said.

Vietnam signs MoU with IDLO on Legal Preparedness for Climate Change

Durban, South Africa - On 7 December 2011, the Government of Vietnam, represented by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MONRE), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) to launch Phase 1 of a Legal Preparedness for Climate Change Initiative (LPCCI) in Vietnam, heralding a new and promising collaboration. The MOU was signed during the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) COP17 in Durban, South Africa.

IDLO Supports Legal Preparedness for Climate Change at the UNFCCC COP17

Durban, South Africa - The IDLO Delegation to the 17th Conference of the Parties (COP17) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) led conferences, launched programs and publications, hosted meetings and expert side-events and supported negotiations on Legal Preparedness for Climate Change in developing countries. In the context of the UNFCCC, IDLO is the main inter-governmental organization to provide expertise and build partnerships on rule of law and the legal aspects of adaptation and mitigation of climate change in developing countries. The IDLO Delegation was led by Marie-Claire Cordonier Segger, Head of Economic Growth and Trade for IDLO, and engaged IDLO legal specialists from Kenya, Mexico, Canada, France and Vietnam.

World AIDS Day: IDLO Launches First Virtual Network on HIV-Related Legal Services in Latin America and Booklet on HIV and the Law in Benin

Rome, Italy – On December 1, IDLO launched the Community of Practice for Latin America (COPAL), an interactive web space for lawyers and activists to share information to improve legal services for people living with HIV and key affected populations. In Benin on 15 November the Justice Minister of Benin, Me Marie Elise Gbedo, launched the first booklet on HIV and the law in Benin (see photo).
