UN General Assembly High Level Meeting on the Rule of Law at National and International Level
On 24 September 2012,
the UN General
Assembly will hold a High-level Meeting on the Rule of Law at the
national and international Levels, to precede the Heads of State
General Debate of its 67th session. This is a unique opportunity for UN
Member States, intergovernmental organizations and civil society to
discuss ways in which to strengthen the global commitment to the rule
of law.
As the only intergovernmental organization entirely devoted to
advancing the rule of law and development, IDLO has been in close
contact with the co-facilitators of the ongoing consultations on the
meeting’s outcome, contributing comments and advice based on field
experience and research.
Earlier in 2012, IDLO organized two workshops in New York, in
collaboration with UNDP and International IDEA respectively, to
highlight success stories in different regions of the world in
promoting the rule of law to support sustainable development.
In preparation for the meeting, IDLO has compiled a series of reference
documents to inform the upcoming discussions on the rule of law and its
broad implications for human, social and economic sustainable
development.
Shortly after the High Level Meeting, on 26 September 2012, IDLO will
co-host two side events at the United Nations, on traditional justice
systems and the role of parliaments in accessing justice, respectively.
These events are intended to keep the momentum and encourage concrete
follow up at the national level on key rule of law issues.
