In Afghanistan, IDLO works to address the systemic challenges for girls and women to gain protection and justice in the Afghan legal justice system.
Gender-based violence in Afghanistan is not limited to one area, as the dozens of Kabul area cases and multiple studies illustrate. The Ministry of Women’s Affairs primary date base of violence against women cases, recorded 1940 cases registered in 26 (out of 34) provinces from October 2006 to Mid 2009.

Rome/Nairobi, 6 August 2010 – On 4 August 2010, millions of Kenyans turned out for a generally peaceful vote on whether or not to adopt a new Constitution. With official confirmation of over 65% of the vote in favor of adopting the new Constitution, Kenyans have sent a strong message of their desire for a new era for the country. The new Constitution offers Kenya the opportunity to involve all Kenyans in building a stronger, more inclusive, peaceful and sustainable future for their country.

IDLO Releases its 2009 Annual Report (English, French)


Assessing the Legal protection of Girl Children in Bangladesh, India, Kenya, and Liberia

Poverty has a female face in many parts of the developing world. Of the 1.5 billion people living on US$1/day or less, 70 percent are female. Girl children, in particular, represent an extremely vulnerable group in many societies, often existing outside the rule of law and, in some cases, domestic laws and enforcement mechanisms themselves serving as a source of oppression. In order to gain a deeper understanding of the factors that support or inhibit the enhanced legal protection of girls, IDLO has implemented a two-year research project in India, Bangladesh, Liberia and Kenya in conjunction with local partner organizations.
